Dr Birgit Schlegel is a Paediatrician with a sub-specialty qualification in Paediatric Neurology. She has been practising in private practice at Constantiaberg Medi-Clinic since
1998. She also works as a Sessional Consultant in the Neurology Clinic at Red Cross Children's Hospital. She has established the only dedicated Tuberous Sclerosis Clinic in South Africa at the Red Cross Children's Hospital.
Dr Schlegel’s special areas of interest include all aspects of child neurology but particularly epilepsy and Tuberous Sclerosis.
Other special areas of interest include childhood autism and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and associated learning and behavioural difficulties.
Dr Schlegel also has a special interest in childhood development and is a certified user of the Griffiths Developmental Scales Assessment.
Dr Schlegel has served on the Board of Epilepsy South Africa. She is an advisory member for a long-established and well-known Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
Support Group in Hout Bay. She is a founder member of a quarterly autism practitioners network meeting.
Dr Schlegel is regularly
involved in continuous medical education presentations on the topics of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, childhood development and autism.
